Home Based Business and Self Employment

Ideas for Self Employment

What’s the hardest thing about becoming self-employed, or starting your own business? For many people it’s coming up with a great business idea or work they can do from home. There are many places with lists of ideas for new businesses, but the best idea for you personally will often be your own unique spin on any given idea. Even if you take one of the top ten home business ideas, which many other people will also be interested in, you can make it unique by your own personal approach to it. A business idea list should be a starting point or springboard for your imagination.

One way to spark this creative process is to use “creativity cards” or even a simple list of random words. Combine each card or random word with an existing business idea and see what comes up. if the original business idea was a hair salon” and the random work was “truck”, you might come up with the idea of a mobile hairstyling service with your salon in the truck. You get the idea. Sometimes the combinations which seem the most off-the-wall can trigger the most unusual and creative business ideas, so if you don’t think of anything at first glance, come back to it later and try again.

Home businesses ideas are all around you, if you open your eyes, your mind and your imagination - and all those business ideas are free! Not all of them are profitable business ideas, so you need to do your homework before investing a lot of time and money, but with practice you’ll find yourself coming up with so many creative ways to make money that one or more of them is bound to be worth pursuing. You’ll have your own personal list of home based businesses that you can evaluate to choose the most likely winner.

Business Names: Ideas

Once you’ve got your idea for the best business to start, one that you’ve evaluated for potential profit and sustainability, one of the things you’ll need to do is create a business name. Sometimes this is simple and direct - “Mabel’s Mobile Hairstyling” for example - but at other times you need a rather more creative business name. Catchy business names can sometimes be too catchy, to the point of being cutesy or trendy, so you’re walking a fine line between boring and too “far out”.

To help with the process of naming, there are a number of naming services available, as well as name generators. Here’s one free company name generator.

If you plan to operate completely or partly online, it’s very important that you check that your business name domain is available before you decide on a business name. That is, make sure you can get “yourcompanyname.com” and it hasn’t been registered already by someone else. If your business will be mainly online and the domain name is very important, then you could use a domain name generator as a business name idea generator.

Another important check is to make sure that the business name you want isn’t already in use. A quick Google search will bring up any major previous uses, but you’ll also need to check locally with your business name registration authority.

Business Start Grants

Many people interested in starting up a home business look for startup capital in the form of grants and loans. In many cases, grants are only available to specific minorities who find it hard to obtain capital through normal channels such as personal loans. For example, there may be grants for women in business, and minority small business grants. Loans are more common, such as a first time business loan, but again many programs are directed at minorities or specific groups like a small business loan for women. A good place to start looking for government small business grants and loans is the official business link to the US Government if you’re in the US, or Canada Business Services in Canada. Beware of the many “helpful” sites which try to sell you directories of government grant and loan sources - most of this information is available for free from the various levels of government, and the directories themselves ore not necessarily complete, correct, or up-to-date.

Work at Home Best Jobs

Maybe you don’t really want to start a business as such, though. Maybe you simply want to work at a job at home. You can do that too, though probably as an independent contractor rather than an employee. Your best chance to find an actual employee “job” is to get your current employer to let you work from home for all or part of the time. Most commonly, people work from home using computer hardware and software to do specific tasks. This can mean using special software (which may be provided by the contractor company) for example, to provide customer service using the computer and the phone. Home computer work can be interesting or boring depending on how you approach it, but it can also damage you physically if you don’t take care to set up your workspace correctly and take breaks. If you do start to have pain in your wrists, shoulders, forearms, elbows etc., please - take it seriously! Change your work habits, and do something about it right away or you will be battling it for years.

Work From Home Legitimate Businesses

One of the first things you see when you start to research real work at home jobs, is the number of scams out there. You need to watch out for the many pseudo-jobs that are widely advertised, like envelope stuffing or home assembly of products, rebate processing, etc. There are also a number of pyramid schemes and cash-gifting schemes which are not only a con, they are illegal in many places. If you need to tell the difference between a legal multi-level-marketing (MLM) setup and a pyramid scheme, check out what the main focus is. If there are real products which are the main focus, and which you stand a realistic chance of selling (not just to family and friends), it’s an MLM. If the main focus is on recruiting more sellers into your “downline”, it’s probably a pyramid scheme. For work from home legit jobs, take care to research the company and the offered job very carefully, and talk to other people who are doing the same job. If the company won’t put you in touch with any, that’s a big red flag. Another red flag is if you have to pay to get into the job. Legitimate work at home jobs don’t require you to pay money to get them!
